Building A Poem – How Writers Write Poetry

Wind whistling, weaving

it’s way

slipping away unseen

That’s all I can think of really

Wrapping my opal shawl around

my neck

braving the biting breeze

Piercing – sighing screaming

Come in from the cold

The poem above is thanks to the ‘How Writers Write Poetry‘ course.

Daniel Khalastchi talked about five tools for poetry:

1) The image

2) The use of figurative language

3) The use of the line

4) The use of sound – repetition, rhyme, the music of poetry

5) Form

The assignment was to build a poem using at least one image and one metaphor. I quite enjoyed the exercise. Join the course, give it a try!

Keep writing!
